Twenty

“Are you okay?” Maria asked, as they walked through the door to her little bungalow at last. Maybe it was the fact they’d gotten so much fresh air that day. Maybe it was the fact that, on the way home from Steve’s, they’d gotten stuck on the road thanks to a truck losing its load, which had caused their half-hour trip to become a nearly two-hour ordeal while they waited for it to clear. Maybe it was the fact Trevor had barely said two words to her since they’d left Steve’s apartment. Whatever it was, she felt tired to her bones and it wasn’t even 8 p.m. yet.

“No, not really,” Trevor muttered, heading down the hall to the bathroom and shutting the door behind him.

Okay then. So much for their idyllic afternoon.

She got Camille out of her car seat and carried her into the kitchen. At least her baby girl had been a downright angel today. Even during the traffic jam, she’d not fussed too much. Thankfully, Trevor had driven so Maria had kept her occupied by leaning over the seat and playing with her or talking to her, she was good. Even when they’d pulled over to do a diaper change on the side of the road, Camille had just rolled with it.

While the baby ate, Maria wandered into the living room and took a seat on the sofa, going over all the new intel they’d learned that afternoon. She had a feeling that all that money turning up in Trevor’s bank account had freaked him out far more than he was letting on. Given his family history, she couldn’t blame him. For all the warmth and camaraderie of Trevor’s family, they had their dirty laundry too. She could still remember being a kid when the news about his dad’s crimes had hit the local news. He’d been convicted of tax fraud. While what was happening with Trevor’s bank account was different, it still had to sting.

Then there was also the fact that unlike his father, he wasn’t guilty.

Now, they just had to prove it.

On Monday, she planned to start looking into some of the other members of the team that had worked on Trevor’s mission. Seemed likely that the true culprit in the captain’s murder would be someone close to him, and the SEAL team members were as likely candidates as any. Trevor probably wouldn’t be happy about it, seeing as how he considered those guys brothers, but Maria wasn’t as close to any of them, so she could be impartial.

Camille finished her bottle and Maria burped her, then carried her into the nursey to get her ready for her bath. The door opened down the hall and Trevor walked past the nursery on his way to the kitchen. He’d been acting strangely around her since they’d left the creamery and she was determined to get to the bottom of it. Beating around the bush wasn’t her forte.

“Hey,” she called to him. “Can you come in here a minute, please?”

His footsteps sounded in the hallway as he returned.
